What Is the “Granny Square”?

The granny square is a classic crochet technique. It originated with grandmothers using leftover scraps of yarn to piece together blankets and garments. Each piece here is hand-crocheted, stitch by stitch, by women in Nepal, so the tension varies slightly from one piece to the next — a distinctive vitality that machine-made, mass-produced goods simply cannot replicate.
